SWEEPS®

A laser that drives your irrigants into the parts of the root canal system files can't reach.

How it works

The LightWalker's Er:YAG laser fires into the irrigant in the access. Water absorbs this wavelength instantly, which creates a vapor bubble.

01

The first pulse makes a bubble

A very short pulse flashes the irrigant to vapor at the fiber tip, and the bubble expands.

02

The second pulse collapses it

A second pulse fires right as the bubble starts to shrink, forcing it to collapse fast.

03

Shockwaves clean the canal

That collapse sends shockwaves that push the irrigant through the entire canal system.

The tip stays in the access and never goes down the canal. The effect is mechanical, not heat, so the dentin isn't affected.

Why it's better

Files only shape the main canal. Infection hides in isthmuses, lateral canals, tubules and the apical third, where only irrigant can reach.

84%

of debris removed from molars with SWEEPS, compared with 50% using ultrasonic activation

89%

reduction in E. faecalis with SWEEPS, compared with 34% using needle irrigation

~5 min

to shape and treat a single-canal case, instead of a 30 to 45 minute bleach soak (Dr. Reid Pullen)

Reaches complex anatomy

Curved canals, isthmuses and multiple portals of exit get cleaned, not just the canal you can see on the radiograph.

Less filing

The irrigant does the reaching, so the canal doesn't need to be enlarged as much. That means a more conservative prep.

Works with your irrigants

Same NaOCl and EDTA you already use. SWEEPS just makes them work harder.

Fewer visits

Better cleaning and disinfection in less time lets most root canals be completed in one appointment.

Debris and bacteria results are from laboratory studies on extracted teeth (Yang et al.; Wang & Shi).

Less pain after treatment

In a randomized trial of single-visit molar root canals, patients started at the same pain level. The day after, SWEEPS patients were already close to pain-free.

0.93

average pain at 24 hours with SWEEPS, vs 4.53 with needle irrigation (0 to 10 scale)

~80%

less pain at 24 hours than needle irrigation

0.13

average pain at 48 hours with SWEEPS, the lowest of all four methods

Average pain score after a root canal

0 = no pain, 10 = worst pain. Shorter bars are better.

Measure it in your own practice

The same simple system the study used. Track it for your next 20 cases and compare against your needle-irrigation cases.

01

Baseline

Before treatment, have the patient rate their pain from 0 to 10 and note it in the chart.

02

Follow up

Text or call at 24 and 48 hours and record the same 0 to 10 score, plus any pain medication taken.

03

Compare

Average the scores for SWEEPS cases and your previous cases. The drop at 24 hours is where the difference shows.

Where it helps

Beyond routine root canals, SWEEPS makes the hardest cleanup jobs in endo easier.

Retreatments

Once the gutta-percha is out, SWEEPS with sodium hypochlorite clears filling remnants. In curved canals it removed more than ultrasonic activation.

Calcium hydroxide removal

Loosen it with hand or shaping files, then SWEEPS removes significantly more than sonic or ultrasonic activation.

Resorption defects

After cleaning the defect with ultrasonics and burs, SWEEPS flushes out the defect and the debris left behind.

Post-op healing

The same LightWalker delivers photobiomodulation to reduce inflammation and post-treatment discomfort.
